A Burst Pipe Is a Plumbing Emergency — Act Fast
Few plumbing problems escalate as quickly as a burst pipe. Water can cause structural damage, destroy flooring, and lead to mold growth within 24–48 hours. If you're in Walton, Newton, Rockdale, Jasper, Morgan, or Clarke County and you suspect a burst pipe, here's what to do immediately.
Step 1: Shut Off Your Main Water Supply
Locate your main water shut-off valve and turn it off immediately. In most homes, it's located near the water meter, in the basement, or in a utility closet. Turning it off stops the flow of water and limits the damage while you wait for a plumber.
Step 2: Turn Off the Water Heater
After shutting off the main supply, turn off your water heater. Running a water heater with no water supply can damage the unit. For gas heaters, set it to "pilot." For electric, switch off the breaker.
Step 3: Call a Licensed Plumber
This is not a DIY repair. Burst pipes require professional diagnosis to locate the break, assess for any other weakened sections of pipe, and make a proper repair that won't fail again. Zach Hall at Hall Mechanical is a Licensed Master Plumber serving all of Walton, Rockdale, Newton, Jasper, Morgan, and Clarke Counties.
What Causes Pipes to Burst?
- Freezing temperatures: Water expands when it freezes, cracking pipes from the inside out
- High water pressure: Sustained pressure above 80 PSI stresses pipe walls over time
- Corrosion: Older galvanized or copper pipes corrode from the inside and eventually fail
- Physical damage: Accidental nail or screw penetration during renovation work
